VOLLKOMMEN. KÖLN. 86 VEEDEL is a 5-year photographic journey through all 86 districts of Cologne. In 2014, Cologne photographer Daniel Zakharov set out to explore the city in which he has lived for 30 years and to deal with it photographically in its entirety. He was interested in what characterized the city of over a million inhabitants beyond the well-known sights and the omnipresent cathedral. With a camera and a map in his baggage, he began to visit the individual Veedel little by little. He was not interested in taking beautiful postcard pictures, but in showing the city from a different perspective, in all its facets, the beautiful as well as the less beautiful. In the end, his tour through Cologne took five years. In spring 2019 he visited the last district on his list, which was Humboldt-Gremberg. By then he had covered well over 2,200 km by foot within the city limits and saw the beautiful, ugly, secret, interesting, boring, sentimental, barren, fascinating and, above all, always surprising corners of the city.
More than 100,000 photos were taken during his journey. In December 2019 he published the photobook to his photo series under the name VOLLKOMMEN. KÖLN. 86 VEEDEL. In addition to numerous photographs from the individual Veedels, the book also contains nine interviews with interesting personalities from Cologne – interviews that Daniel Zakharov has conducted in recent years to complement the photo series.
