DISTANZLOS AUS DER FERNE by Viola Halfar

There is something treacherous about approaching one’s subconscious. It makes you aware of what’s true. And true is what has always been true subconsciously. You cannot see closeness, only desire and longing form an image of closeness.

It is cold this night. As if magnetized, I followed deafly. Where does it drive me when I follow the inner movement? The intrinsic current has led me into the houses and apartments of strangers. Seeking closeness to people I entered their homes, their rooms and beds. When I was close to them, I was close to myself. But they stayed away from me.

For DISTANZLOS AUS DER FERNE German photographer Viola Halfar portrayed eleven people who were strangers to her before and together with her model she staged and documented these encounters. The viewer, if he/she gets involved, can experience the different levels of intimacy and experience his/her own limits of approaching and distancing. The own subconscious is betrayal and magic. Closeness and distance.
